Iran says US too tied up to fight

2007/10/03/1725

RTFA: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7026754.stm

Washington’s military commitments to Iraq and Afghanistan would hamstring an attempt to wage war on Iran, the Iranian foreign minister has said.

“Our analysis is clear: [the] US is not in a position to impose another war in our region, against their taxpayers,” Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters.

Hey Iran, little bit of advice… don’t taunt America. We may not send troops into Iran, but sending nukes is always ‘on the table’, as Bush would say. The difference between occupying a country vs. blowing the shit out of it is about $9 billion dollars per month.

2007/10/03/1421

RTFA: http://www.ussc.gov/ANNRPT/2006/SBTOC06.htm

This is the eleventh edition of the United States Sentencing Commission’s Sourcebook of Federal Sentencing Statistics. This Sourcebook contains descriptive statistics on the application of the federal sentencing guidelines and provides selected district, circuit, and national sentencing data. The volume covers fiscal year 2006 (October 1, 2005, through September 30, 2006, hereinafter “2006″). This Sourcebook together with the 2006 Annual Report constitutes the annual report referenced in 28 U.S.C. # 997, as well as the analysis, recommendations, and accounting to Congress referenced in 28 U.S.C. # 994(w)(3).
The Commission has continued its statutory mission to collect data on federal sentencing decisions. The Commission received documentation on 72,585 cases sentenced in 2006 under the Sentencing Reform Act. The Commission coded and assimilated the information from these sentencings into its comprehensive, computerized data collection system.

The numbers don’t lie.

National Drug Control Strategy

February 2007

Appendix B: National Drug Control Funding

Agency Summary, FY 2006-FY 2008

Following up on the use of national forests to grow marijuana, here are the details of the US federal response to drug use in the United States. This contains some interesting details, but I think this generally represents federal priorities for drugs.

Drug crops move into California forests

2007/10/03/1016

RTFA: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7016057.stm

The United States is not just one of the world’s biggest consumers of marijuana.

According to UN figures, it is also a major producer.

This smacks in the face of the anti-drug campaigns that said buying pot supports terrorism. While I have no problem with people growing pot, I do have a problem with people growing in national forests. I’ve heard horror stories of people booby-trapping their crops and using horrible fertilizers, which ends up damaging local wildlife.
