Slashdot | White House Wins On Spying, Telecom Immunity

2007/10/18/1650

Washington Post report that Senate Republicans have outmaneuvered Democrats, who withdrew a more stringent version of legislation to control the government’s domestic surveillance program. The legislation that will go forward includes a grant of legal immunity to telecommunications companies that have assisted the program.

Normally I would link to the washington post article, but there are some interesting comments worth reading on slashdot.

These are Mitt Romney television spots. They play in sequence - I recommend just watching. These ads are INTENDED to be regionally targeted (e.g. in Iowa) so it’s really fascinating. The platform is pretty well articulated across these videos. You could construct a clear outline after watching about 10 minutes worth.

YouTube - Press Conference: The Three Top GOP Candidates

2007/10/18/1428

RTFA: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9t5OYUCWf7o

Kent Snyder and Jonathan Bydlak of the Ron Paul 2008 campaign report on 3rd quarter fundraising numbers for the Republican candidates. They show there are three candidates well-poised financially for a serious run for the GOP nomination. For more information, see

This shit is fantastic: a comparison of the Republican candidates, as seen by their campaign finances. It’s worth watching, but the short of it is: Rudy, Thompson, and Ron Paul have a real shot. This is to say that only three candidates have raised enough donations to have money to spend on the primaries.

Romney is millions of dollars in debt over his campaign. McCain is bankrupt, but if he can get a loan, he could stay in the fight. Ron Paul proves he can responsibly manage his campaign for the nomination.

Editorial: I sortof feel sorry for McCain. Romney … well, he’s a rich Mormon missionary, but one with a history of business success.

LONDON - London’s Science Museum canceled a Friday talk by Nobel Prize-winning geneticist James Watson after the co-discoverer of DNA’s structure told a newspaper that Africans and Europeans had different levels of intelligence.

James Watson provoked widespread outrage with his comments to The Sunday Times, which quoted the 79-year-old American as saying he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really.”

Stephen Colbert announced his candidacy for president on “The Colbert Report” on Tuesday night, tossing his satirical hat into the ring of an already crowded race.

Hmmm… this is really wild. I am not quite sure what to make of it all.
