Human Rights Watch has appealed to Saudi Arabia to halt the execution of a woman convicted of witchcraft.

In a letter to King Abdullah, the rights group described the trial and conviction of Fawza Falih as a miscarriage of justice.

The illiterate woman was detained by religious police in 2005 and allegedly beaten and forced to fingerprint a confession that she could not read.

Among her accusers was a man who alleged she made him impotent.

Human Rights Watch said that Ms Falih had exhausted all her chances of appealing against her death sentence and she could only now be saved if King Abdullah intervened.

New Bill To Allow Police Misconduct Be Hidden From Public

2008/02/14/1542

A new bill proposed at the legislature would allow for police to withhold misconduct reports from the public. Supporters of the bill believe that police misconduct should be kept secret from the public so to not discredit police testimony. Others say that a forthright police unit is essential to the community.

In September, Jared Massey was zapped with a taser by Trooper John Gardner. A video of the incident was recorded from Gardner’s patrol car. Gardner can be seen shocking Massey until he hits the ground while Massey’s wife screams from the side of their SUV.

More than a million people watched the video on “YouTube.” Massey was shocked to see his new found fame. The footage may have never been seen had Massey not made a records request to obtain the tape.

Currently, misconduct reports are available in Utah with an official records request. Under the bill SB260, sponsored by Senator Chris Buttars, the video and investigation report from Massey’s tazering might have been kept secret from the public and journalists.

McCain adviser wont campaign against Obama

Earlier today, the Swamp noted that Mark McKinnon, a senior campaign adviser to both President Bush and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, had said some time ago that he could not serve McCain if Sen. Barack Obama became the Democratic presidential nominee.

And now this evening, the Republican consultant is reaffirming his stance that he will have to step out of his advisors role for the campaign if Obama wins the Democratic nomination. He explained his aversion to campaigning against Obama in an interview aired by National Public Radio, where Michele Norris interviewed him for All Things Considered:

“You told Cox Newspapers last summer - and you repeated this in a new Texas Monthly interview published soon - that you would, quote, not work in the general election if Barack Obama is the opponent. Why? Norris asked.

“That’s referring to a confidential communication that I had with the McCain campaign when I came abroad, and I don’t really want to say much more than that, except to say that under any circumstances, depending on who the nominee is, I will be supporting 100 percent John McCain, McKinnon said.

“But I just want to clarify… that you wouldn’t work in the general election, you’d be supporting him on the sidelines? Norris asked.

I will be supporting from the sidelines, McKinnon said.

“Why… sit this out if you have such strong feelings for John McCain, if Barack Obama is the opponent. What is it you’re concerned about? he was asked.

“I met Barack Obama, I read his book, I like him a great deal, McKinnon said. “I disagree with him on very fundamental issues. But I think, as I said, I think it would a great race for the country, and I would simply be uncomfortable being in a campaign that would be inevitably attacking Barack Obama. I think it would be uncomfortable for me, and I think it would be bad for the McCain campaign.

Ahmadinejad to become first Iranian president to visit Iraq - Yahoo! News

BAGHDAD (AFP) -
Iraq’s government said on Thursday that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due in Baghdad on March 2 for the first visit ever by an Iranian president to the neighbouring country.

The announcement came shortly after Iraqi and US officials said that Tehran had asked for a delay in talks expected this week in Baghdad between the United States and Iran on the future of Iraq.

It’s called “Operation Chameleon.” Take an Islamic nation (Iraq), install a puppet ruler, alter the local religion to be more similar to neighbors (Iran), and bingo: your puppet looks just like your “enemies”. Next thing you know, your puppet is being wined and dined on Kish Island, and “this might be the start of something grand.”
